Chris Burden was a master of art about isolation, about physical and psychological challenges. The times have challenged me to look back at the archives at my early writing where I found my 1979 story about him. Seeing that it was Chris Burden’s birthday a few days ago, on April 11, and the five year anniversary of his premature death is coming on May 10, I decided to post a link to this decidedly grainy scan of my article for the L.A. Weekly, where I had just been hired as art critic. Looking back, he was one of the artists who developed my faith in the special quality of art made in post-war Southern California.
